Beijing Vikings remain in 1st Division
With a 1-0 win over French LE in the last game of the season, the Beijing Vikings managed to climb to 8th spot in the table and thus avoiding relegation to 2nd Division.
Viking midfielder Jesper 'Bestseller' Kristensen scored the single goal assisted by coach Eskil.
Prior to Saturday's match the Vikings were 9th in the table, equal on points with 8th spotters X2/Teppen (Japan) but with a poorer goal score. A one point draw with the French would be sufficient for the Vikings to overtake the Japanese. However, an abysmal spring season in which the Vikings had collected only 3 points in 8 games had made football fans all over Beijing fear the worst.
With Saturday's win the Vikings proved those fears groundless.
In a written address to the team, coach, Eskil Berg Kappel, congratulated the players and thanked them for a great effort. He also paid thanks to the fans for not entering the pitch in the dying minutes of the game. "We owe both them and ourselves another year in First Division", he further stated.
However, the coach also commented on the upcoming challenges that have to be met in order to succeed in the next season: "We have plenty of work ahead of us", he said, "many new players have to get better integrated and, with very very few exceptions, if any, we are in miserable shape!"
The coach pledged to design a tailor made 'Beijing Vikings Fitness Program' in order to make the players fit for yet another season in the top league.
